When Audrey Kepler inherits an abandoned homestead in rural Queensland, she jumps at the chance to escape her loveless existence in the city and make a fresh start. When you are all that stands between the murderous past and the fate of those you love, how far would you go to save them? By next morning I had finished the last chapter and have not regretted blowing my ‘nonessentials’ budget one bit (although to be fair it didn’t cost very much). There are a couple other clues it’s a debut novel by an Australian author, and is ‘an enthralling, haunting tale of obsession, love and courage’.Īfter reading the blurb, I headed straight for the till to make my purchase. Some Photoshop work gives the image a mysterious, nostalgic, dark-tinged, aged look. A woman in a dress, facing away from the reader, stands in a field of long grasses. So I picked up one particular book that stood out from all the others on the shelf. I like covers that make me wish it was my book with that packaging. I like covers that are beautiful, create an atmosphere and make me want to pick it up off the shelf. Sometimes I’ll buy a book purely because the cover is amazing, and it’s not until I read the book later on that I discover the story is pretty good too. Your book has to be pretty damn spectacular for me to buy it if its got a crappy cover (excluding the classics, I expect their covers to be pretty dull). The cover was the first thing that caught my eye. I steered away from the fantasy and romance sections and looked at everything else in the shop. So I went to the bookshop and browsed through the shelves, looking for something new and refreshing, the sort of thing I haven’t read much of before. I’m an avid reader, but alas, lately I have not had much time for sitting down and relaxing with a cuppa and a good book. When you think of rural Australian womens’ literary fiction, what is the first name that pops to mind? Rachel Treasure? Fiona McCallum? I’ve got another one to add to the list: Anna Romer.
